Brad Wenzel Brings Hard-hitting Comedy Style to Lincoln’s Zoolarious Scene | Entertainment
Brad Wenzel was 16 when he first picked up the mic at a small comedy club in Ypsilanti, Michigan, a dozen years ago.
The self-proclaimed “comedy nerd” was nervous – so nervous his knees thumped.
“I didn’t know this was happening in real life,” he said. “I always thought it was a cartoon thing.”
The nervousness was real, but he had the foresight to read the play and throw himself at their mercy with these words: “A 16-year-old walks into a bar, and everyone gets uncomfortable.
Playing the youth card worked. And laughter was the perfect cure for his nerves. He then launched into a joke about forming a musical group and calling it “Have you seen this kid?” Which, he said, would make distributing flyers very easy.
“Once I had that first laugh, it was the biggest adrenaline rush you could imagine – it was amazing,” he said. “I was pretty much a garbage can after that, but I was like, ‘This is the best thing in the world. “And then my second time on stage was much worse.
“It told me you really had to work on it. It’s not going to be easy.”
Now 28, Wenzel has perfected his craft. He traveled the country, moved from Michigan to Los Angeles, recorded an album and made three appearances on “Conan”.
