Gatwick airport live: Updates after travel chaos continue with ‘short notice’ flight cancellations as holidaymakers return from Jubilee holiday
Travel disruption continues at Gatwick Airport today (June 5) as the Jubilee weekend draws to a close. Passengers took to Twitter to raise concerns as flights would be canceled at short notice, “less than three hours before take-off”, according to one traveler. Today holidaymakers complained that WizzAir has allegedly canceled flights.
It comes as British Airways announced it would temporarily suspend flights between London and Islamabad from June 15 to November 20, which usually operate daily. Delays and cancellations are therefore expected to continue.
However, other passengers reported short security queues and called the process “incredibly well organised”. As of 9:00 a.m., the status of the airport is: “no queues for security at either terminal. Check-in areas are busy but no significant queues, except in the check-in area of Vueling.”
A Gatwick Airport spokesman said: “The airport is operating as normal today but will be busy with 830 flights today. We continue to advise passengers to arrive at the airport as soon as open for check-in for their flight. Typically it’s 3 hours for long haul and 2-2 ½ for short haul.”
The spokesperson added: “52 departures and 30 arrivals have been canceled today. The majority of these flights are operated by easyJet, but Wizz Air, BA and Vueling have also canceled flights.”
Saturday June 4, 25 departures and 22 arrivals from Gatwick airport would have been canceled. According to The Guardian, at least 7,000 passengers were affected, including easyJet flights to and from Amsterdam, Nice and Milan.
WizzAir has been contacted for comment. Follow live for more updates.
