United Loanee Facundo Pellistri make first loan for Alaves
Facundo Pellistri is making steady progress on loan to Alaves.
The Manchester United loaner made his first La Liga start last night, after two previous appearances as a substitute.
Pellistri got 65 minutes before he was substituted, and it wasn’t a good move from Alaves.
Alaves took a 2-0 lead against Real Betis at half-time. The home side pulled out a goal in the 61st minute, then Alaves made a double change, with Pellistri coming out.
Without Pellistri on the pitch, Alaves collapsed late, conceding two late goals to succumb to a 3-2 loss.
There might have been nothing Pellistri could have done to stop a late collapse, but it reflects well on him that he was not involved when his teammates let the points slip away.
How did Pellistri fare?
Pellistri played on the right wing as Alaves lined up in a 4-4-2 formation.
He didn’t have a lot of possession, but used the ball well when he saw it, completing 100% of his passes.
Pellistri was fouled twice and played a defensive role, making an interception and winning a header.
He also had a chance to score, but saw his effort on goal saved by the goalkeeper.
Pellistri, 19, is playing football in his third country in the space of six months.
It was always going to be a tough loan for him, playing for relegation fighters, and progress is measured by him simply by getting playing time and gaining experience.
Making his first start means progress, that the coaches are starting to trust him.
Maybe they need to trust him a little more. Alaves was winning while Pellistri was on the pitch, and fell to win after removing him. They may regret this decision this morning.
They now occupy 19th place in La Liga. The next match will be against Cadiz, 15th, on Saturday. It might be a good idea to give Pellistri the full 90 minutes.
