A journalist’s tweet revealing details of his salary after quitting received an overwhelming response with many Twitter users coming forward to share their own views.

Victoria Walker, senior reporter at the New York-based publication The dot guy tweeted the specific amount of salary she was receiving and also encouraged those applying for her old job to ask for more.

After receiving a positive response to her tweet, Walker confessed that she wasn’t sure if sharing the information was the right thing to do.

“I debated whether I wanted to be as transparent, but as journalists we cannot demand transparency from powerful entities without wanting to do the same ourselves. So #shareyourpay,” she tweeted.

One Twitter user commented, “I believe this is the first step for fairness everywhere! Pay transparency is a must and it’s a sure way to level the playing field for everyone!

According to The Independent, a 2020 survey of almost 3,000 workers in the UK, commissioned by the Trades Union Congress, found that almost a fifth (18%) had been told by employers that they were prohibited from discussing their salary with their colleagues. Staff.

The survey also found that 50% of employees are unaware of details regarding executive compensation in their workplace. Another 53 percent said they did not know the compensation details of other employees within their organization.

Is sharing salary details legal in Australia

Discussing salary is a sensitive topic, but it’s not illegal in Australia.

General etiquette is to maintain salary confidentiality to avoid disputes and unhealthy competition.

While open policies regarding employee pay can enable a transparent and fair workplace, confidentiality around pay can also minimize hostility and competition.

In some places, salary secrecy clauses restrict the disclosure of wages and salaries.

Advantages and disadvantages of salary secrecy clauses

Some believe that employee secrecy clauses protect the privacy of the employee and the company and leave less room for hostility and awkwardness between employees.

This in turn can lead to healthy collaboration and growth for all employees and the smooth functioning of an organization.

It can also facilitate individual growth in terms of key performance indicators (KPIs), rewards and salary increases.

Salary secrecy clauses also allow greater bargaining power during the recruitment process for new hires.

This helps recruiters choose the right person for the job and adjust the salary based on their skill level. On the other hand, it can encourage unfair discrimination in the workplace.

However, wage disparity, particularly between the sexes, is an ongoing problem. Being transparent about pay and compensation could help close this gap and level the playing field.
