You won’t believe the stars who were almost thrown at friends
Can you imagine Eric McCormack and Tiffani Thiessen like Ross and Rachel? Or Vince vaughn and Jon cryer sitting in Joey and Chandler’s La-Z Boys? Yeah, we can’t either and yet it almost happened.
Almost three decades later FriendsFirst, it’s hard to see anyone else playing the iconic characters on the NBC sitcom. And even Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer all had to fight for what would become their breakout roles, competing with other promising actors for their place on NBC’s iconic sitcom, then called Six on one.
Some stars were already engaged with other pilots, while others were brought in at the last minute when the roles were this closure to be filled. And a friend almost played a different friend. Fortunately, Cox, arguably the best known of the sextet thanks to her work in Family ties, Seinfeld and this one Bruce springsteen video, had to plan to ask to read for Monica.
According to the casting director Ellie Kanner, the plan was to allow the actress to audition for Monica with the full intention of impersonating Rachel. But when she “got it,” Kanner told the Huffington Post in 2015 that everything had changed.
“We were just blown away,” admitted Kanner. “We were like, ‘Oh shit! I guess she must be Monica. ‘”
